Comm Games Road Race

I hate to keep going on about it, but 5am is feckin early!!!

The women's race began at 9am, and they raced the 9kmish in about 3 hours. George and Michelle went and saw the stat of the women's race then headed over to me, to entertain and hang out with me till the end of their race. Australia's Natalie Bates came in 1st with Oenone Woods and Nicole Cooke 2nd and 3rd. Results here.  The ladies bunch was split in to pretty much right from the word go. There were about 4-5 riders in the lead bunch, with the rest of the group trying to bring them in, then with about 2 laps to go Natalie made a break for it.

Over the past week, of getting up at 5am, i've really got to know really early mornings. And spending the last 2 mornings out, standing on Punt Road, i've got to feel how the earth warms up. at 6am the earth is a nice stable temp, then at about 7ish, just as the sun is getting up, there is a cool breeze that sweeps over te surrounding land. This drops the temp by about 3-4 degs. It's like the sun gets a bit ahead of itself, so Mother Earth sends a cool breeze to get the morning temp right.

Anyway, the blokes started racing at 1pm.  It was a massive brunch, 136 riders.  There was a pretty big crash 2 laps into the 15 lap/167km race, which split up the field. There was a lead bunch of about 5 riders, one which was David, from Kenya. Now Kenya doesn't have the best cycling team in the world, that was proven out at the MTB race, but David Kinjah is a little slice of Kenyan gold!!! He was riding his little heart out in the breakaway!!!  They stayed in the lead for like 3/4 of the race, untill 6 laps to go, when the main group swallowed them all up and spat them out the back and that's pretty much where he stayed for the rest of the race.

There's something about race day.  There is a vibe around that makes you feel nice inside. I was at the same spot i was at yesterday. The crowd was pretty small during the women's race, but it got pretty big and rowdy during the men's race. Claud, Angoose and Kate graced me with their presents for the men's race.  Now when Goose turns up to something, you know it's gunna be fun, and it didn't take long for Goose to stir up the crowd and get everyone pumped.  Right near where i was standing there was a group of guys, who were as camp as a row of tents. They began the day pouring cocktails for each other and generally having a gay old time. Just before the men's race started they all disappeared, for like 30 mins, only to return in FULL DRAG!!! Was too funny. 4 drag queens dressed in short blue netball skirts, white high heels, white "Wife Beaters", shocking wigs and Ozzie flags. How much more gay Ozzie could it have got?? Not much.

Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie. Pout Pout Pout!!!!!!

3 laps to go the croud was pretty pumped. Everytime David, from Kenya, went past everyone would be chanting "Kenya, Kenya, Kenya". He was soo happy to be in the race. He'd be like hi 5ing the croud and blowing kisses!!! Sooo freaking funny!! Check out some of the vids of him!!

Anyway, with 4 laps to go the Ozzie Matt Hayman made a break for it and managed to hold it out till the end, where he finished first infront of David George and Allan Davis. Check results here

So this ends my Commonwealth Games Volunteer experience.

Would i volunteer again??  Well i'll have to think about that one.

Cheers
